Sneezing and coughing can contribute to the spread of viruses and bacteria in your building. If health safety in your building is a concern, then minimizing the number of sneezes and coughs should be a priority. One facility solution that can decrease the amount of allergy and cold symptoms in your building – yet often overlooked – is air duct cleaning. Your air ducts and your HVAC system are the veins of your facility for air circulation. And much like a vein, if there is a clog or building up of debris, the flow becomes restricted. Here are things to consider when looking at the overall well-being of your air ducts.

Change those air filters!

Your building’s air ducts are responsible for ensuring your building can effectively produce both cold air and hot air, while also circulating and dispersing airflow throughout your entire building. It will transfer air along with any particles or debris to your air vents. This is where air duct filtration comes in. Routinely changing your air duct filters is recommended, no matter the setting. If you have noticed your building not effectively heating or cooling, you might have a dirty or ineffective filter. Telltale signs of this would be a stuffier atmosphere, dust accumulation, and unpleasant odors being present.

Filters are assigned a MERV rating. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and advises on a scale of 1-16 how effectively your filter traps unwanted particles. The most commonly used filters for residential and small business settings are rated at 6-8, for basic filtration that is cost-effective. Any MERV rating above this is reserved specifically for extremely high

Get rid of the foul odors!

What’s that smell? If nobody has any idea where the smell is emanating from, it’s possible your air ducts are the source. They could be harboring volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mold, or mildew that’s creating unpleasant odors. All of these are harmful and can exacerbate allergy symptoms for those who suffer from it in your building. You might think, “Why not just use an odor eliminator? Those can get rid of the smell coming from my ducts.” The problem with this solution is that cleaning will still have to be done, as odor eliminators only do what their name says and cant remediate mold or mildew. You don’t want to just address a symptom of the problem, you need to solve the cause of the issue.

Fortunately, City Wide can assist with mold remediation services as well as air duct cleaning. Should you have mold present anywhere in your building, we have the resources and know-how to get rid of it.

Clear up the dust!

Your HVAC system will capture a lot of incoming dirt and debris from the outside. If your building is dusty overall, there is a likelihood your HVAC system is either not running optimally or is malfunctioning. HVAC systems also have filters that need to be routinely replaced and. if left unattended can increase the production of dust in your building. Also, your air duct system may develop leaks over time, allowing more outdoor particles into your building. It is best to have a technician who specializes in ventilation diagnose your air ducts and recommend how you should approach cleaning your ducts.

City Wide can offer you the expertise needed to help make decisions on how you should maintain your air ducts in your building. We can recommend options, schedule the work, and ensure it is completed to scope and your satisfaction, all this while staying within budget and timeframe for project completion.
